Health & Physical Education High School Learning Objectives

This webpage provides an overview of what your child will learn about Health and Physical Education in high school. The Health and Physical Education learning outcomes focus on key concepts in physical, social, and emotional health and behaviors.

In high school students have the option to take Health and Physical Education together or as separate courses.

Health

When your child arrives at high school, they will expand on essential skills they learned in middle school to continue making informed decisions about their health.

Examples of Your Child’s Work at School:

  • Comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.
  • Analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors.
  • Demonstrate the ability to access valid information and productions and services to enhance health.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance and avoid or reduce health risks.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health.
  • Demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.
  • Demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.
  • Learn about health skills in a variety of ways including classroom lectures, hands-on activities and projects, video clips, group discussions, and the support of community speakers.
  • Explore careers and occupations in health fields, including community health.
  • Study life-long nutrition, fitness, and mental health awareness.
  • Explore infectious and chronic diseases.

Physical Education

Throughout high school, students will continue to learn the essential skills needed to become physically literate individuals.

Examples of Your Child’s Work at School:

  • Participate in physical fitness activities that increase cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and flexibility through sports and games, rhythm and dance, water safety and leisure, and lifetime activities.
  • Demonstrate competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.
  • Apply knowledge of concepts, principals, strategies, and tactics related to movement and performance.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.
  • Exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.
  • Recognize the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.
