GEAR UP Iowa Proclamation

 

Kim Reynolds, Governor of the State of Iowa, signed a proclamation to support GEAR UP this week. GEAR UP students from the Sioux City Community School District were present to celebrate the occasion. Here’s a copy of the proclamation:

 

P R O C L A M A T I O N

WHEREAS,        the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federally funded, competitive grant program designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education; and

WHEREAS,        GEAR UP Iowa serves low-income, minority and disadvantaged students and their families; and

WHEREAS,        GEAR UP Iowa delivers support and resources to students and their families, starting in seventh grade and continuing through high school and beyond to fulfill their dreams of attaining postsecondary education; and

WHEREAS,        GEAR UP Iowa includes interventions such as tutoring, mentoring, rigorous academic preparation, financial education and college scholarships to improve access to higher education for low-income, minority and disadvantaged students; and

WHEREAS,        GEAR UP Iowa is built around public-private partnerships, enlisting the resources of government, business and community groups to support low-income students as they prepare to enter and succeed in college; and

WHEREAS,        GEAR UP Iowa is a partnership of the Iowa College Student Aid Commission  with 12 school districts and nearly 40 higher education institutions and community organizations; and

WHEREAS,        GEAR UP Iowa serves more than 8,000 current tenth-graders in 26 schools across the state; and

WHEREAS,        the week of September 17, 2017, has been declared National GEAR UP Week; and

WHEREAS,         the State of Iowa is committed to providing a quality education for all students, helping them to achieve their highest potential:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kim Reynolds, Governor of the State of Iowa, do hereby proclaim the week of September 17 – 23, 2017, as

GEAR UP IOWA WEEK

and urge all citizens to join me in this special observance.
