East High Named Finalist for STEAM Contest

Students at Sioux City’s East High school are getting a chance to show off their skills in 21st century problem-solving.

The “Earth and Space Science” class is one of 255 finalists in Samsung’s “Solve for Tomorrow” contest, with looking to use their skills in science, technology, engineering, arts and math to reduce the cost of heating and cooling school buildings.

“The idea that was selected as a state finalist was to put solar panels on the roof and they could use that for two things. One, it would help regulate the temperature in the classroom, you know not as hot or hot as cold depending on the season and while doing that it would save money and allow us to use that saved money in other important fields to help the school and community,” said teacher Trevor Miller.

The East High class was one of 5 finalists from Iowa in the national contest, which has a $2 million dollar grand prize.

If their proposal wins the state contest this month, East High will win a package of Samsung technology worth $25,000 dollars.
