Irving Elementary celebrates good attendance

Sioux City schools are celebrating their 99% attendance rate with fun.

September is “Attendance Awareness Month” in Sioux City schools and this week kids at Irving Elementary are celebrating with five theme days, aimed at making sure kids are in class and ready to learn.

“If there’s any way that we can help the child get to school, that’s what we’re going to do. One of the leading causes of absenteeism for children, is dental problems, so we are increasing the amount of dental health programs in our schools to help reduce the chronic absenteeism,” said Associate Superintendent Kim Buryanek.

The district also recommends kids get enough sleep each night, eating healthy foods and saving time in the mornings by laying out their clothes the night before.
