Morningside students get chance to buy their own healthy snack

Homegrown fruits, veggies, and herbs are commonplace at the farmers market, but seeing elementary students make a purchase might not be.

It’s all part of the Pick A Better Snack program that aims to teach kids about healthy food choices.

Young students at Morningside Elementary joined teachers, farmers market vendors and ISU Extension staffer for this year’s  “student farmers market”.

Each student received $4 dollars to spend on fresh, local produce that can be taken home and shared with family.

“It’s really exciting to see their excitement.  The excitement over what they get to chose and what they get to take home that’s great tasting produce. Carrots for you too,” said Janna Wesselius of Cornucopia Farmers.

Laura Johnson with ISU Extension Services said, “These kids are already learning about having a healthy option for a snack and any time we can tie in our local foods with healthy nutrition. It just helps everyone in our community.”
