Irving parents & students share reading time “at the beach”
Some Sioux City students went to the beach Thursday.
But they didn’t go on a field trip.
Instead, parents joined their children at Irving Elementary School for “Books on the Beach.”
The students read to their parents, took selfies in front of beach backgrounds and enjoyed lunch together.
The activity is normally held outdoors but was moved inside this year due to weather concerns.
Staff say the event incorporates a vital part of education.
“The reason behind Books on the Beach is to promote family involvement in the school, to ferment a love of reading with children and their parents. Basically, it’s a feel-good feeling. We want our families to feel welcome here at Irving and understand the importance of their involvement in their children’s education.” said Leslia Mercural, Irving Elementary teacher.
Staff adds this is the most popular family-involvement event for the school.
Each child is allowed to take one book home for free to continue the activity with their family there.
