West High students take a ‘crash course’ on Geo-Physics

On Wednesday, students at West High School took a crash course outside of the classroom.

Fifty-one students attended a Geo-Physics class taught by an Iowa State Patrol trooper Tuesday morning.

During the class, the trooper explained the physics behind car crashes he typically sees.

After a few equations and some videos, the students got a hands-on lesson with live car crash simulations in the school parking lot.

Students watched as the officers calculated skid markings while showing the students how crashes are analyzed through science.

“It takes it all out of abstract and puts it into real life so it’s not just learning stuff in a book,” says Trooper Lynn Olesen, Iowa State Patrol.
