Early literacy initiative provides free books to community
On Tuesday the Mary J. Treglia Community House kicked off a new campaign involving local agencies in the community.
The 0 to 3 Prime Age to Engage Initiative helps bring books and bookshelves delivered to six local agencies to get children reading.
The initiative is to help parents, grandparents, and daycare providers to enhance the learning of these children in their early years.
Officials say brain development is most crucial in the years of 0-3.
Kindergarten readiness is a big goal for the initiative, to promote reading and to help steer children away from screens like iPads, and phones.
“Brain development is really important and we want to see books in children’s hands so when families come into lobby’s rather than handing a cell phone to the child to entertain them we hope that parents will grab one of the books and read and interact with the child in the lobby area,” says Kim Buryanek, Associate Superintendent of Sioux City Community School District.
The Home Builders Association built the bookshelves for the agencies.
Parents are allowed to take books home for free. If books run out, local book drives will help fill the need.
