Liberty Elementary students get a lesson in emergency preparedness

Fourth Graders at Liberty Elementary got a lesson in emergency preparedness from Juniors at the Sioux City Career Academy and the American Red Cross.

The American Red Cross developed The Pillowcase Project to teach students about emergency preparedness, which includes filling a pillowcase with everything you might need during an emergency.

Students learned what to do during tornadoes, earthquakes, and fires, and how they should react in the stressful situations.

Students decorated a pillowcase to take home, with the hopes they develop their own plans in case of an emergency at home.

“Well, it’s just a good reminder for our students for what they need to do when they’re in school if there’s some sort of emergency such as a fire or tornado or when they are at home,” said Malina Ard, teacher Sioux City Career Academy.

To be eligible to participate in the teaching of the Pillow Case Project, the students registered to be volunteers with the American Red Cross.
