Two Sioux City Community School District high school students, Anna Kern (West High) and Lien Tran (North High) were selected to participate in the 2018 Global Youth Institute for the World Food Prize this October. Only around 200 high school students from around the world were selected to participate in the three-day conference.

Selected students and their teacher mentors traveled to Des Moines, Iowa, to attend this exciting three-day event at which they interacted with Nobel and World Food Prize Laureates and discussed pressing food security and agricultural issues with international experts.

In addition, 2018 East High alumna and World Food Prize student intern, Olivia Tidwell, was invited to attend and present research at the Global Youth Institute. Over the summer, Tidwell conducted research that explored factors pertaining to the adoption of water purification technology at the S M Sehgal Foundation in Gurgaon, India. She specifically looked at the Jalkalp biosand filter which helps to decrease bacteria, viruses, iron and arsenic in water.

Throughout the conference, student delegates were afforded the opportunity to present and discuss their findings with international experts and their peers, connect with other students from around the world, tour cutting-edge industrial and research facilities, and take part in symposium discussions with global leaders in science, industry, and policy.
