Sioux City Fire Rescue teaches Liberty students fire safety

Third graders at Liberty Elementary got a lesson in preparedness from Sioux City Fire Rescue.

Students learned to recognize fire hazards and escape from a smoke-filled room, all thanks to the department’s Fire Safety Home.

Lieutenant Joe Rodriguez of Sioux City Fire Rescue says they hope they can help students be more prepared, and potentially save a life.

“These are fragile lives, and they are just trying to understand and by taking this message home they can ask their parents help them out making a fire escape plan because we want them to be better prepared. We don’t want to lose any lives to a fire, we want to prevent fires from happening,” said Lt. Joe Rodriguez, Deputy Fire Marshal.
