Bryant Elementary students learn from SCPD and special K-9 guest Zeus

Bryant & SCPD K-9

Students at Bryant Elementary in Sioux City had a special guest named “Zeus” visit the school on Thursday.

Zeus is a K9 officer with the Sioux City Police Department.

Handler Mike Sitzman showed the kids just a few things Zeus is trained to do, including obedience, narcotic detection, and bite work.

“We always try to get some one-on-one basis with them, show us in a positive light and let them know we are there to help them if they ever have any problems, to contact us and we are just people, too,” said Mike Sitzman, Sioux City K9 Officer.

Teachers say it’s vital their students are educated about the impact local law enforcement can have.

“I think it’s important for kids to see a police officers role in the community and how their purpose is to protect the citizens, make our city safe. So, I think it’s important to bring leaders like this into our school so the kids can interact with them,” said Mary Olorundami, a 3rd-grade teacher at Bryant Elementary.

To prepare for Zeus and Officer’s Sitzman’s arrival today, students read a few books about police and K9 handlers.
