West Middle student wins essay contest sponsored by Iowa Elks Association
A West Middle School student is being honored for his writing.
Langston Saint, a sixth grader at the school, has been awarded first place for his essay in a contest sponsored by the Iowa Elks Association. It’s called “Our Flag — What it Means to Me.” More than 400 essays were submitted from nine area schools. The judges say Saint’s essay stood out for it’s originality, and the changes it’s gone through during the years.
“The teacher showed it to me and I was like that sounds cool, I think I’ll make a entry. As I got more and more serious, it turned out to be a pretty good one apparently,” said Langston Saint.
Saint read his essay in front of his fellow classmates and Sioux City Elks. One member of the Elks says it’s another way to educate future generations about our country.
“Most of them realize that when they say the pledge of allegiance in school every morning that it means we are pledging our allegiance to our country to be united as one,” said Susan Smith.
Saint’s essay will move to the state competition, with results coming in March.
If his essay does win he will attend the Elk’s state conference and read his essay in front of the entire convention.
