IA Agriculture Secretary meets with Career Academy students
On Wednesday Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig spoke with students at the Career Academy in Sioux City about the future of ag in the Hawkeye State.
He learned about the new agriculture pathway the academy offers to its students.
The program is still in its infancy, offering just one class right now focused on animals.
Naig says it’s important to have programs like this available to students.
He says there’s a need for more people in the ag workforce.
“We need to connect with students earlier to help them understand the types of opportunities that exist. I would hate for someone to think, whether they grew up on a farm or not, that there aren’t opportunities right here, good careers, high paying jobs that are in agriculture,” said Naig.
Students say they’re excited to have this pathway offered to them.
“The school is really moving forward and allowing students to explore the things they like to do,” said Cassie Rohrbaugh, a sophomore at East High School.
School officials say they’re planning to grow the pathway in the future.
