SCCSB approve improvements for two elementary schools
Hunt Elementary was built back in 1906, and it’s set to be torn down to make way for a new building opening in 2022.
But first, all asbestos must be removed from the 113-year-old building.
Monday night, the Sioux City Community School Board members decided on a bid for the work.
The bid is for Phase 2 Asbestos Abatement, and the predicted completion date is July 7th.
At the beginning of the next school year, Hunt students will attend the former Crescent Park Elementary School.
That is the interim location until the new Hunt building is completed in August of 2022.
“It took us a long time to work with the community respectfully to discover the very best place to build it,” says Dr. Paul Gausman, Superintendent, Sioux City Community Schools. “And as you can see we are building it right on the platform we already owned with just slight expansions.”
Also approved Monday night, some equipment for the new Bryant Elementary School.
“We approved all of the playground equipment for that school that will have room for about 650 students,” adds Dr. Gausman. “A couple of different playgrounds that will be set up on that campus so that the students who are a little younger have different equipment than those who are a little bit older.”
Dr. Gausman adds that the construction for Bryant Elementary is on schedule and will open in August.
