Students give Hunt Elementary a goodbye hug

As the school year comes to an end for many students, it’s also the end of an era for Hunt Elementary.

The building has bee open since 1906 and is the oldest in the Sioux City School District. The building will soon be demolished to make way for a new building.

“There’s not a lot of area to spread out in our building and also with the amount of stairs that we have were are not handicap accessible that is challenging when families come in our community members. We did have a student in a wheelchair so that was challenging so I think all of those extra special things and just to have a brand new building for our students,” Hunt Elementary Principal Cami Barker said.

But before the school could close its doors for good, elementary students gave the building one final goodbye on May 29, 2019, coming together to give the building a big group hug.

The students will be moved to Crescent Park Elementary School while the new school is under construction. That building is expected to be completed by August 2022.
