Dual College and High School Credit Helps SCCSD Students Earn “Certificate of Nurse Assistant”

The Sioux City Career Academy, a program of the Sioux City Community School District, offers over 30 career pathways to help students make a connection between their education and their future. The Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) pathway yielded nearly 60 high school students that earned both a high school diploma and a “Certificate of Nurse Assistant” from Western Iowa Tech Community College.

CNA students, like most students in the Sioux City Career Academy, earn dual high school and college credit. By earning dual credits, students can achieve an associate’s degree, complete the first year of a bachelor’s degree or obtain job certification – like the ”Certificate of Nurse Assistant” – by the time they graduate high school.

Students with the “Certificate of Nurse Assistant” can then go on to begin work as certified nurse aides in a healthcare setting. Many students do this while furthering their education in the healthcare field.

The CNA pathway provides students with the fundamentals of patient care in the healthcare environment. Students learn basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, meeting human needs, safety measures, infection control, and physical care.

Students earned four college credits from WITCC in addition to the “Certificate of Nurse Assistant.”
