West High Student Invited to Attend Coveted Global Youth Institute Event Hosted by World Food Prize

West High junior, Colin Houts, has been selected to attend the coveted Global Youth Institute hosted by the World Food Prize Foundation. Houts will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, in mid-October where he will interact with Nobel and World Food Prize Laureates and discuss pressing food security and agricultural issues with international experts.

Houts earned this honor following two successful presentations at preliminary events, the Northwest Iowa Youth Institute at WITCC last fall and the eighth annual World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute at Iowa State University in April. Houts conducted research and wrote a short research report on critical food security issues in Latvia before presenting his findings.

At the Global Youth Institute this October, Houts will present and discuss his findings once again, but this time with international experts and their peers. In addition, he will spend three days connecting with 200 other students from around the world, touring cutting-edge industrial and research facilities, and taking part in symposium discussions with global leaders in science, industry, and policy.

By participating in the Global Youth Institute, Houts will also be eligible to apply for the prestigious Borlaug-Ruan International Internship, an all-expenses-paid, eight-week hands-on experience, working with world-renowned scientists and policymakers at leading research centers in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
