Life Scout dedicates project to local veterans

Students from North Middle at Boy Scout Project

Casa de Paz Rehabilitation Center, in Sioux City, celebrated the dedication of a flagpole, flower bed, and memory garden, that was spearheaded by Dakota City Life Scout Blake Navin.

The project meant weeding the current flower bed, planting annual plants, and placing a bird bath for the residents to see. Blake also upgraded the current flag and flagpole, and added a memorial plaque.

Community Relations Director of Casa De Paz, Charley Bonanno, says he’s excited for the opportunity to work with a community group. “I believe the more opportunities we can connect relationships between our youth and our elderly the better,” said Bonanno. ”Our facility is part of the local community and, of course, jump at any opportunity to enrich the lives of our residents.”

Blake, who’s a 13-year-old 8th grader at North Middle School, in Sioux City, said the project was important to him because his uncle and great-grandfather are both veterans. Blake says the project at Casa de Paz is a great way to show all veterans that we appreciate them. “I am very thankful for Casa de Paz’s help in making this project happen,” Blake said.

Blake is a Life Scout, right now, and his goal is to become an Eagle Scout by the time he turns 14.

He is part of Troop 451 in Dakota City, Nebraska, and has been active in the Boy Scouts since 2012.
