Student holding you are enough sign to raise awareness for suicide prevention.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States with more than 47,000 Americans dying by suicide in 2017 alone. Now, Siouxlanders are stepping up and holding out a hand. with a hope of helping just one person through their toughest times.

At the football game between East and West, students, parents and fans from both teams wore yellow as a way to show solidarity and support for suicide prevention.

The event was organized by You Matter Siouxland, a student group with a goal to help others through those tough times.

“September is actually Suicide Prevention Month and just recently we started a Sioux City chapter of You Matter, You Matter Siouxland is what we have been calling it. It’s something that we want to get out around Siouxland and it’s nice having all of the students here supporting the cause,” said organizer Ellie Risdal from East High School. “It’s something not a lot of people want to talk about sometimes, so I just wanted to put it out there and let people know, you do matter and people are listening.”
