Over 1.5 million students were entered from 21,000 different high schools and only 16,000 semifinalists were selected.
Two Sioux City Community School District seniors are selected as semifinalists.
· East High student: Heather Miller, daughter of Bart and Roberta Miller
· North High student: Derek Hwang, son of Robert and Cathy Hwang
The semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. Over 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.
NMSC also named the commended scholars for 2019-20. North High student, Quintin Greenwell, son of Dan and Gina Greenwell, earned this recognition.
