Elementary Students Help with Local Food Drive
Students at two Sioux City Elementary Schools combined to collect over 13,000 food items to help local organizations help those in need.
Nodland Elementary School students presented over 7,000 items to the Community Action Agency Food Pantry. School spokesperson Candy Booe-Kass says Nodland has conducted a food drive for 15 years.
“This year we chose the Community Action Agency. We try and build character in our students. October was caring month, so this is kind of what we work on…,” Said Booe-Kass
A first-grade class collected the most items, so they earned a pizza party.
Director Jean Logan of the Community Action Agency says the items are needed for their food pantry, which is open 40 hours per week.
“We’ve really had a lot of people come in this fall for assistance, so it’s very important to us that Nodland does this. They’ve been doing this for us every year now for several years. I think it’s great because kids learn to give back to the community and we’re deeply grateful to have the food because right now there are just a lot of people that need assistance,” said Logan.
Sunnyside Elementary School collected over 6,000 food items.
Their food will benefit the supply closets at East, North, and West High Schools.
