Local firefighters read to kids

Sioux City Fire Rescue is expanding its efforts to reach out to kids and build a positive relationship with them.

A group of firefighters from Fire Station 3 visited Unity Elementary Monday morning to read to the students in Kindergarten and 1st-grade classes. They’re hoping to build trust with kids so they know who to call when they need help and also to spark a love for reading.

“I have gotten together with principal Kilborne to develop a reading program said, Paul Hendricksen.” “Come to the classroom, read to the kids get the kids interested in reading, and throw in some fire safety tips as well.”

The firefighters say they plan to return to Unity once a month for the rest of the school year.
