Unity Elementary students send off firefighter who is being deployed

Students at Unity give Sarah a surprise send-off

Kids at Unity Elementary gave a special sendoff to a local firefighter as she leaves for deployment.

Sara Orwig of Sioux City Fire Rescue is being deployed to Kuwait with the 185th Air Refueling Wing as part of the security forces. Orwig works as a volunteer at Unity Elementary, so her students surprised her with a special send-off.

Sara said, “I was completely overwhelmed, that was quite the send-off, a giant thank you to my crew and all the staff and children at Unity for arranging that, it was so touching. Just another example of the great community we live in.”

Orwig and other firefighters have spent the last few weeks reading to students at the school. One of those students, Jesse Vaughn, said, “It was real exciting because there is Sarah over there and she is going to go and that was really nice because it’s the last day at our school.”

Following the final reading session students, teachers, and staff lined the hallways for Orwig. They even made cards for her to read ahead of her deployment.
