West Middle students incorporate math into clocks

Students at West Middle present their Future Ready projects by incorporating math into clocks

West Middle School seventh graders in Sioux City presented their innovative analog clock, which incorporates math, on Thursday.

Sharon Russell, their teacher, said each student reinvented their own clock, by replacing the numbers with formulas.

The variables of those equations, when solved, are the missing numbers on the clock.

Russell said the project was part of the Future Ready unit, which hopes to prepare students for success in college, career, and citizenship.

The students also got to incorporate creativity, by giving their clocks a unique design.

“I think they did a fabulous job. I was impressed by the creativity of everyone’s clock, and how they are all different. They were supposed to design it for a math geek, was the idea. And so that was their idea of what a math geek might like,” said Russell.

According to Sharon Russell, part of the Future Ready unit includes using communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.
