Community celebrates long-time Sioux City Principal’s retirement

Principal Mary Kay Kollars retires after 40 years with a surprise parade

They didn’t let COVID-19 spoil the retirement of a Sioux City principal.

Teachers, students, and family got together for a car parade to celebrate the retirement of Mary Kay Kollars. She’s served as a principal at Nodland, Crescent Park, and most recently Bryant Elementary.

“This was just the best, to see all of my friends and people I worked with, it has just been so heartwarming, I have had 40 great years of service in Sioux City schools I have surrounded myself with wonderful people. Kind of just touched by all this,” said Kollars.

Cars covered in decorations filled the streets around Bryant Elementary.

“She is the best. If you ask anybody, they will agree. She will always have your side and she just really cares about her community and the students,” said Kelsie Nibaur.

Even though it wasn’t the usual kind of retirement celebration, everyone made sure this milestone achievement was recognized.
