SCCSD to Recognize Class of 2020 with Special Commencement Events
The Sioux City Community School District recognizes the immense value and importance of recognizing our recent graduates in-person. While graduation ceremonies in 2020 look a little different than in past years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we remain committed to honoring the accomplishments of this class. Therefore, the Sioux City Community School District will host a commencement event at each high school on July 25, to recognize recent graduates.
The health and safety of our staff, students, and guests is a high priority. For this reason, these events have been reformatted. Graduates will not all be brought together collectively in one large facility for a traditional commencement program. Instead, graduates will be honored in several small group commencement spotlights. The information below outlines the reformatted event.
Logistics
- ○ Each small group will include up to 10 students to be recognized during a ten minute, small-group commencement exercise.
- ○ Each graduate can bring up to four guests.
- ○ Graduates should wear caps and gowns.
- ○ Commencement exercises will be hosted at each respective high school.
Commencement Exercise Format
- ○ Each Building Principal will address each group of graduates.
- ○ Dr. Paul Gausman, Superintendent of Schools, will address each group of graduates.
- ○ Jeremy Saint, Board President, will address each group of graduates.
- ○ Each graduate’s name will be called as he/she comes forward to be recognized.
- ○ Once each student in the group has been recognized, pomp and circumstance will play.
Safety Guidelines
- ○ All graduates and guests are required to wear a mask when inside the high school. Individuals will not be permitted inside without a mask. Please bring your own mask.
- ○ All staff will wear masks and adhere to 6 ft. social distancing guidelines.
- ○ Precautions will be taken to prevent cross-contamination and multiple touchpoints for graduation.
- ○ All graduates and guests must take their temperature before coming to the commencement exercise. If your temperature is above 100.4, please refrain from attending.
- ○ Additionally, please do not come to a commencement exercise if you are considered high-risk for infection, are sick, or are taking care of someone who is sick or has recently been exposed to COVID 19.
- ○ Water fountains will not be open.
- ○ Students/families should refrain from congregating before or after small group exercises.
Together, we can protect the health and well-being of staff, graduates, and guests while still making meaningful memories together. We look forward to honoring our graduates on July 25.
Commencement Schedules

East High School Commencement 2020
When
- East High commencement exercises will begin promptly at 6:00 pm on Saturday, July 27.
- The first group of graduates should report to East High by 5:45 pm.
- Graduate names, arrival times, and commecement spotlight times are listed below.
- Graduates and their guests can only be present during their assigned time.
- Commencement exercises will take place in the East High School Auditorium at 3200 S. Cypress St.
- Graduates and guests are asked to check-in with the person outside the front doors (Door 1), 15 minutes prior to their stage time.
- Graduates will lineup, in alphabetical order, in the Music Hallway to enter the auditorium. There will be orange cones spaced 6 feet apart to ensure social distancing.
- When graduates enter the auditorium, there will be X’s across the stage for graduates to stand on. The first graduate will walk across the stage to the last X on the eastside of the stage. The rest will follow suit.
- Guests will enter the auditorium from the Music Hallway (Westside) and exit towards the Kitchen Hallway (Eastside). We will have rows of seats blocked off for social distancing.
- Guests and graduates will then exit the building to the right – out the kitchen door (Door 15) or turn left -use the back hallway, around and past the Media Center, to the exit (Door 2). There will be signs for guests and graduates to follow. Please continue practicing social distancing as you exit the building.
- There will be an East High School backdrop inside and outside (if weather permits), for pictures.
- North High commencement exercises will begin promptly at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 27.
- The first group of graduates should report to North High by 10:45 am.
- Graduate names and commecement spotlight times are listed below.
- Graduates and their guests can only be present during their assigned time.
- Commencement exercises will take place in the North High School Auditorium at 4200 Cheyenne Boulevard.
- Graduates and guests should park in the main student parking area.
- Graduates and guests are asked to check-in with the person outside the front doors, 15 minutes prior to their stage time. From here, graduates and guests will be separated. Administrators will be present to help direct graduates and guests.
- Graduates will be lined up backstage in alphabetical order. They will enter the stage from the center and take their spots on stage. The ceremony will last approximately 10-minutes and they will stand the entire time.
- Viewing areas will be spaced out for ten guest groups along the main level of the auditorium. Seating will not be available for all guests for this ceremony. Each area will have at least one seat for those who may need it.
- At the end of the ceremony, graduates will proceed off stage and out of the auditorium. Guests should follow their graduates out of the building.
- Following commencement, there will be a photo opportunity for visitors.
- West High commencement exercises will begin promptly at 2:30 pm on Saturday, July 27.
- The first group of graduates should report to West High by 2:15 pm.
- Graduate names, arrival times, and commecement spotlight times are listed below.
- Graduates and their guests can only be present during their assigned time.
- Commencement exercises will take place in the West High School Auditorium at 2001 Casselman Street.
- Graduates and guests are asked to park in the student parking lot and line up at Door 4 (Band door), 15 minutes prior to their stage time.
- There will be an administrator present to organize groups before entering the building. There will be balloons and signage by this entrance.
- Following each group’s stage time, an administrator will guide guests and graduates to the exit door. Once outside, there will be West High backdrops available for photo opportunities.
