School Menus and Nutrition Information

Sioux City Community School District school meals are carefully designed to provide a variety of food choices that accommodate student preferences and meet the guidelines established by USDA. By limiting salt, fat, and sugar content while increasing the number of vitamins and minerals such as iron, school meals are becoming more nutritious. In addition to helping children become healthier, these nutritious meals have also been shown to improve students’ social behaviors and academic performance.

USDA Free Meal Program

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved FREE Breakfast and Lunch for Sioux City Community School District students starting September 14, 2020. Free meals will be available through the end of the 2020-21 school year.

Who can access meals?

  • All Sioux City Community School District students ages 18 and under will be eligible for free meals (breakfast and lunch)
  • All On-Site Learners will be served meals at school.
  • Virtual Learners are still able to pick up meals. Meal distribution schedule. (link to meal distribution page)

How does this affect your student’s school lunch status?

Students that already receive free meals will experience no change in lunch status. Students that are full pay or reduced lunch status will be Temporarily moved to FREE status. No meal charges will be made to student accounts through the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

When the USDA ends the free meal program, students will return to their original lunch status, and student accounts will be charged accordingly for the next school year.

Ala Carte Items are Available.

Ala carte options will still be available; however, ala carte items are not covered by the USDA funding, and students will be charged separately for ala carte items. You can pay for ala carte items on the District website. Please also make sure your child’s lunch balance through September 11 is paid in full. Follow this link to pay your lunch fees online.

Families are still encouraged to complete the Iowa Eligibility Meal Application.

If your family typically receives free and/or reduced-price meals, you are still encouraged to complete the Iowa Eligibility Meal Application. Data from these applications help the District qualify for state and federal funding from grants and other funding sources. These funds allow us to provide enhanced educational opportunities in our District. We need your help to ensure our 2020-21 free and reduced meal data remains current and accurate. You can complete the Iowa Eligibility Meal Application online (Apply here) or pick up an application from your child’s school.
