The Board recognizes the valuable resource it has in the members of the District community and supports community involvement as one of the many strategies to improve, and/or enhance the educational experiences of students and the professional development of staff. When possible and in conjunction with the educational program, members of the District community may be asked to partner in activities or provide resources that promote high levels of academic achievement
Recruitment, training, utilization, and the maintenance of records for the purposes of insurance coverage and/or recognition of District volunteers are the responsibility of the Superintendent or his/her designee.
The benefits and rewards of volunteering must be balanced with the safety of the students and others in the schools.
Volunteers must submit a Volunteer Application Form to the Building Administrator consenting to a background check including but not limited to screening for felony convictions, assaults, sex offender registry records, and child and dependent adult abuse registry records. Results of the background check could disqualify an applicant from volunteering in the schools.
If a volunteer applicant is disqualified from volunteering, the person may appeal in writing to the Superintendent or his/her designee. Upon receipt of such an appeal, the Superintendent or his/her designee may require additional information and/or an interview with the applicant.
Volunteers must maintain the confidentiality of student records and must review and agree to abide by the District’s anti-bullying/harassment policies.
For purposes of this section, “volunteer” shall mean any person who meets each of the following criteria: (i) the person is formally participating or assisting with a District event or activity at the request of or with the approval of the District; (ii) the person is not an employee of the District or a member of a District committee; and (iii) the person is likely to have direct contact with students through participation in the event or activity under circumstances where the person may not be directly supervised by a district employee at all times.
