Continuation of Health Insurance Coverage

Code Number: 451.54

Employees who terminate employment with the District prior to retirement will be eligible for continuation of health care coverage as required by federal and state law.

Covered employees who retire from the District before attaining age 65 are eligible to continue coverage under the District’s group health insurance program at their own expense. If the employee had family coverage at the time of the employee’s early retirement, continued coverage will be offered on that basis.

The length of continued coverage is dependent on particular facts and circumstances. Nothing in this policy is intended to create, alter, supersede, or expand the legal rights of employees and their dependents regarding the continuation of health insurance benefits.
