Code Number: 691.1
The school calendar will accommodate the educational program of the District. The school calendar is for a minimum of 1,080 hours and includes, but is not limited to, the days for student instruction, staff development, in-service time, and parent-teacher conferences.
Unless otherwise allowed by law and approved by the Board, the academic school year for students shall begin no sooner than August 23. Employees may be required to report to work prior to this date for in-service training and development purposes.
Special education students may attend school on a school calendar different from that of the regular education program consistent with their Individualized Education Program.
The Superintendent, or his/her designee, in his/her discretion, may excuse graduating seniors from up to five days or thirty hours of instruction after the District requirements for graduation have been met. The Superintendent, or his/her designee, may also excuse graduating seniors from making up days missed due to inclement weather if the student has met the District’s graduation requirements.
It shall be the responsibility of the Superintendent, or his/her designee, to develop and recommend a school calendar for consideration, and adoption by the Board annually, and to submit a specific school calendar for planning purposes three years ahead at the same time. Even after adoption, the Board may amend the official school calendar when the Board considers changes to be in the best interests of the District’s educational program. The Board shall hold a public hearing on any proposed school calendar prior to adoption or amendment.
