School Resource Officer (SRO)

Code Number: 1081

The District values a cooperative community approach between schools, parents, police, and other resources in meeting student needs. The District shall welcome into its educational program School Resource Officers who have professional skills, abilities, training, insights, and judgment for dealing with student problems. School Resource Officers are considered “school officials” as they perform a service or function as part of the school building administrative teams in certain capacities for which the District would otherwise use its own employees.

The officers will have headquarters in the senior high and middle schools and will be available for assistance to elementary schools. Officers may wear plain clothes, should attempt to be known to the students, not as punitive agents, and will maintain the full authority of accredited police officers.

The School Resource Officers will serve the dual functions of liaison and prevention and will also attempt a) to identify students who display at-risk behaviors that are commonly found in the juvenile court system and, b) to help in the prevention of a recurrence of those at-risk behaviors.
